LABELS ARE LABELS, RIGHT?

Not quite. The right label depends on the job.

Choosing a label isn’t simply a case of picking a size and sticking it down. The adhesive, material, environment and printing method all need to be considered to make sure your labels perform as required.

Choosing the wrong specification can result in poor adhesion, damaged labels, failed standards or costly re-labelling.

Adhesive Type

What are you sticking the label to?

Different surfaces require different adhesive properties. Your application may require an adhesive suitable for card, metal, plastics or removable/re-applicable use.

Where will the label be used?

Temperature and environmental conditions can have a significant impact on adhesive performance. Applications involving freezers, heat, moisture or outdoor conditions may require specialist adhesives.

Material Type

What environment will the label be exposed to?

Paper labels are suitable for many everyday applications, but can absorb moisture in humid, damp or cold environments. In these situations, synthetic materials such as PP or PE may provide greater durability and resistance.

How long does the label need to last?

A label designed for a single-use application has very different requirements from one that needs to remain legible and securely attached for the lifetime of a product.

OverPrinting

Will the label be printed before or during use?

If you’re overprinting your labels, the face material and printing process need to be compatible. Depending on your application, this could include Direct Thermal, Thermal Transfer, Laser or Inkjet printing.
