As part of the Reflex Group we are committed to reducing the impact that packaging has on the environment. Our mission is “to become the world’s most sustainable packaging company” and that’s why we’re wiping the slate clean. By 2030 we’ll have captured the entire volume of carbon emitted from the day the company was founded in 2002.
Thermal Transfer Ribbons (TTR) are the latest product that we offer that is aiming to become more sustainable and help us reach these targets.
Starting with the hugely popular wax products used on Flat Head printers we can supply the AWRXL product from Armor Iimak.
This product combines new technologies to reduce environmental impact without compromising performance and quality:
- 3,35µm PET film – the thinnest TT ribbon film available on the market. Standard ribbons are 4.5 µm – approximately 29% thinner.
- 100% solvent free including on the backcoat
- Increased ribbon length – the thinner carrier film allows the ribbon to be up to 40% longer than the traditional ribbons designed for each printer. This improves running time with fewer media changes, less packaging including boxes, wrapper, cores etc. It also saves on transport and storage costs as space in optimised – further reduces CO2 impact after manufacture.
Case study
110mm x 450m Wax – possibly the most popular ribbon size used in the world.
In a business that uses 3000 of these ribbons we would save the equivalent of 8000 plastic bottles being thrown away due to the thinner micron material used on the AWRXL.
In practical terms it means even more: Instead of producing 110mm x 450m ribbons we produce 110mm x 600m ribbons. This will work fine in printers that have been designed for the shorter 450m ribbon because the carrier film is so much thinner than the standard ribbon type. It allows much longer lengths to be achieved without affecting printer performance.
To print the same number of labels that normally requires 3000 ribbons you now only need 2250 ribbons.
- 750 fewer ribbons
- 750 fewer ribbon changes on the printer
- 75 fewer boxes
- Up to 150 fewer cores
CO2 saving is also considerable.
The Solvent Free nature of this product results in the saving of 830g of CO2 for every traditional ribbon replaced with AWRXL ribbons (based on 110mm x 450m).
3000 x 830g is 2.49 Tonnes of CO2! which is the equivalent of:
🌳 41 tree seedlings grown for 10 years would absorb about 2.49 tonnes of CO₂.
🚗 10,000 km driven by an average petrol car.
🏠 3 months of electricity used by an average UK household.
🛫One round trip flight from Amsterdam to New York for one person.
So, saving 2.49 tonnes of CO₂ is like parking your car for a year, skipping a transatlantic holiday flight, or giving 40 young trees a decade to breathe easy.
